How much influence does an incumbent outgoing president's popularity have on the outcome of the next election? In other words, does a popular president make it more likely that his party's candidate will keep them in the White House for a third term?

Relations between Donald Trump and the Republican National Committee (RNC) appear to have reached a new low. The billionaire GOP front-runner has savaged the RNC in a new interview, arguing that RNC chairman Reince Priebus "should be ashamed of himself...because he knows what's going on."
Syrian "elections"
It's hard to square the idea of democratic elections in a country where the government lacks control over huge swathes of territory and a war prevents millions of voters from participating. But that's not stopping Syrian President Bashar Assad from casting a vote, and it won't stop him holding up the certain victory as evidence of his own popularity -- and using it as leverage.
