"The Voice" begins its battle rounds
Now that the blind auditions are over on "The Voice," it's time for Team Adam, Team Blake, Team Shakira and Team Usher to begin the battle rounds.
First up were Amber Carrington and Sasha Allen of Adam Levine's team. Mentored by Lady Antebellum singer Hillary Scott, the two took on Pink's song, "Try." Levine chose Carrington, and Usher and Shakira both immediately hit their steal buttons to try and grab Allen. She chose Team Shakira.
Team Adam's Judith Hill and Karina Iglesias also battled to James Brown's "It's a Man's Man's Man's World." The two women blew the judges away with their duet, leaving Shakira to profess: "It was almost deliciously contradictory to witness so much female power and to hear them say, 'This is a man's world.'"
In the end, Levine chose Hill. But again, Shakira came in with the steal and took Iglesias for her team.
Team Shakira's first battle pitted Garrett Gardner against J'Sun. They were advised by Good Charlotte's Joel Madden and sang The Heavy's "How You Like Me Now." She chose Gardner, sending J'Sun home.
Team Blake's Holly Tucker and Michelle Raitzin got some mentoring from Sheryl Crow before battling to Carrie Underwood's "Blown Away." The coach chose to keep Tucker, explaining, "I have to go with what I'm good at and that's country artists."
Shelton also pitted Christian Porter against the Swon Brothers on a performance of Tom Petty's "Won't Back Down." Shelton picked the country-singing brothers, making them the first duo to ever make it past the battles.
Usher turned to Pharrell to mentor Jess Kellner and Taylor Beckham on their rendition of Amy Winehouse's "You Know I'm No Good." He decided to keep Kellner, and Shelton chose to seal Beckham for his own team.
