The Nominees: Bennett Miller

"Capote" is Bennett Miller's debut as a feature film director. His only other movie directing credit is "The Cruise," an odd little (and almost unseen) 1998 documentary about a New York City bus tour guide.

In the meantime, Miller has been directing television commercials for a living.

That probably won't be necessary any more. "Capote" is nominated for Academy Awards for best director, best adapted screenplay and motion picture of the year. Star Philip Seymour Hoffman is up for best actor and co-star Catherine Keener was nominated for best supporting actress.

  • On the Web site for "Capote," Miller says of his austere and understated style of directing: "The style of the film put Phil under the lens of a microscope, but it was on him to deliver. There was no safety net."

Born Dec. 30, 1966, Miller grew up in Mamaroneck, N.Y., a suburb of New York City.
