Texas cop indicted for sex with female inmate...and phony overtime
(CBS/AP) EDINBURG, Texas -- A suspended South Texas police officer was allegedly "making time" in more ways than one.
The accused, former Edinburg gang investigator Robert Alvarez, is charged with filing bogus time sheets, and having sexual relations with a jailed female robbery suspect.
The McAllen Monitor reports an eight-count indictment unsealed last week says Alvarez misused official information, violated an inmate's civil rights and filed incorrect time sheets involving overtime pay.
Alvarez is a former Edinburg, Texas gang investigator who appeared in a 2009 episode of the History Channel TV series "Gangland."
Defense lawyer Reynaldo Merino says Alvarez, who was indefinitely suspended in December, was surprised by the indictment.
The indictment says Alvarez had sexual relations with a jailed woman in February 2010. He's also charged with having a sexual relationship with another woman he allegedly tracked using cell phone records secured through a subpoena.
