Tequila firm KO's De La Hoya deal after rehab
When Oscar de la Hoya admitted he abused drugs and alcohol and cheated on his wife in a recent interview, he was quick to point out that his transgressions were "not Tiger Woods" level.
While that may be true, the former boxing champ is now sharing at least one thing in common with the beleaguered golfer - a lost sponsor.
According to the New York Post, De La Hoya has been dropped as "brand ambassador" for tequila Tres Generaciones after he admitted his stint in rehab for alcohol dependency.
De La Hoya admits adultery, suicidal thoughts
The news comes just a few months after Beam Global Spirits & Wine announced the deal with the "Golden Boy," declaring that De La Hoya "epitomizes so many of the same traits and qualities of Tres Generaciones," the newspaper reports.
But in light of De La Hoya's drinking problem, the company has TKO'd the sponsorship.
"We have severed all ties with Oscar because of his personal issues," a rep told the Post.
The rep said that the company was unaware of the boxer's alcohol problems when they paid him to be brand ambassador - and may seek reimbursement.
"Those issues became clear shortly after (the deal was signed), and so the deal never really got off the ground. We advocate responsible drinking," the rep told the newspaper. "I suppose we should ask for our money back."
