Tennis Great Budge In Accident

Tennis great Don Budge broke his leg and was critically injured Tuesday when his car hit trees after skidding off a wet road in the Pocono Mountains.

Budge, 84, had to be cut from the wreckage by rescue crews. He was airlifted to St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and might have internal injuries.

The accident happened near Budge's home in Milford at 9:30 a.m.

In 1938, Budge was the first player to win all four of the Grand Slam tournaments.

He was inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame in 1964. He was honored as athlete of the year in 1938 by The Associated Press.

Budge was selected as one of Tennis Magazine's 20 greatest players of the 20th century.
