Tennessee 13-year-old charged with murder in death of 12-year-old brother
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Police in Knoxville say that a 13-year-old boy shot and killed his 12-year-old brother Tuesday night, reports CBS affiliate WVLT.
Officers responded to a shooting call at 7:15 p.m. that evening and found a 12-year-old boy dead in a bedroom.
Investigators initially thought the boy died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, but discovered evidence leading them to believe the boy was murdered, reports the station.
The 13-year-old was charged with first-degree murder at 4 a.m. Wednesday and taken to a juvenile detention center. He is expected to appear in court anytime between Wednesday and Friday. Attorney Greg Isaacs is expected to represent the 13-year-old.
The principal of Northwest Middle School, where both boys were students, released a statement: “We are deeply saddened by the tragic event that occurred Tuesday night involving two of our students. Our hearts are heavy as we offer our thoughts and prayers to the family during this very difficult time.”
Authorities will not say if the parents will be facing any charges and could not give a motive for the shooting.
Officials will not release the name of the victim and suspect due to the ongoing investigation.
