NEW YORK (CBS) Autopsy results are still pending over the sudden death of Andrew Koppel, son of T.V. anchor Ted Koppel. Andrew died early Monday after a drinking binge in Manhattan.

Ted Koppel and his wife are heartbroken over the loss of their only son, the two said in a statement reflecting on Andrew's death.

"Our son, Andrew, was a brilliant, caring man, whose loss we will mourn for the rest of our lives," Koppel and his wife, Grace Anne Dorney Koppel, wrote in the statement.

Andrew Koppel, a 40-year-old former attorney with the New York City Housing Authority, reportedly had a history of substance abuse problems. He was declared dead around 1:30 a.m. in an uptown Manhattan apartment in the Washington Heights neighborhood.

According to the New York Post, Andrew's longtime girlfriend Ilona Lieberman is currently pregnant with the couple's second child and is in grieving over the loss of her partner. The couple has a toddler daughter, Alice, named after Ted Koppel's grandmother.

"This has been a devastating tragedy for our family," Lieberman said in a statement read by her sister, Michelle Lieberman.

On Lieberman's website are several photos showing her with a beaming Andrew and Alice on a beach. There are also pictures of Ted Koppel with the family.

"We will always remember Andrew as a generous, loving and compassionate father, partner and friend. Our family grieves enormously. We would appreciate the press allowing us now to grieve privately," Ilona said in the statement, which Michelle read outside their parents' home in Rockaway Beach.

Additional tests were needed to determine the manner and cause of death, said Ellen Borakove, a spokeswoman for the city medical examiner. They will take a few weeks to complete.
