Teacher's aide charged with filming sexual acts between students
GLENARDEN, Maryland -- CBS News is following a disturbing story at an elementary school in a Washington, D.C. suburb.
A worker has been charged with sexually abusing and videotaping students, on school grounds, while class was in session.
Police say they know of 10 victims, but that could double.
Deonte Carraway, 22, was a paid teacher's assistant and the director of a Youth Choir.
Police believe that during the school day at a elementary school in Glenarden, Maryland and at an Aquatic Center, he was videotaping sexual acts between minors and sexually abusing some of the victims, ranging in age from 9 to 13.
So far, detectives said they have uncovered approximately 40 videos.
A victim's relative called police after discovering a nude photo sent via the messaging app Kik on the child's cell phone. Kik allows users to remain anonymous.
A lawsuit has been filed alleging that the abuse was "common knowledge" at school and that the principal "refused to take any action."
That principal is now on leave. The school district said it will corporate with the investigation.
Carraway being held on $1 million bail. According to court records does not yet have an attorney.
