Suspect in fatal shooting of NYPD officer ID'd as Tyrone Howard
NEW YORK -- The suspect accused of shooting and killing a New York City police officer Tuesday night was released from a hospital Wednesday and transferred to police custody, reports CBS New York.
He has been identified as 30-year-old Tyrone Howard. He has not yet been officially charged.
The shooting happened around 8:30 p.m. on a pedestrian overpass, where two officers caught up with a man suspected of stealing a bicycle, after responding to a report of shots fired, the station reported. Police officers and the suspect exchanged gunfire.
New York Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said late Tuesday that 33-year-old officer Randolph Holder died at Harlem Hospital after being shot in the head. Holder was a five-year veteran of the NYPD, Bratton said.
"He did what every other officer in the NYPD does when the call comes -- he ran toward danger," police Commissioner Bill Bratton said Tuesday. "It was the last time he will respond to that call."
The suspect suffered a gunshot wound to the leg. He has 20 prior arrests including assault, robbery, criminal sale of a controlled substance, criminal possession of marijuana, public lewdness, criminal trespass and conspiracy, according to police.
Howard was wanted and was being sought by the NYPD for a previous shooting in Harlem.
