Start Your Next Office Pool with Lolligift

When one of my writers recently announced that she was pregnant, I found myself passing the hat for a gift -- almost literally. Despite living firmly in the 21st Century, it seemed odd that I was secretly passing a greeting card around into which people could insert 10 dollar bills.

Well, the new millennium has finally caught up with office gifts -- Lolligift is a Web site that lets you create a pool for office gifts and collect the money electronically.

If you've ever used an online event planning service, nothing here will surprise you. Create a free account and then specify an event for your pool. You can add details, photos, how much money you need to collect as well as contribution increments. Your co-workers can even leave messages on the event page. Then send everyone a link to the page and wait for the money to roll in.

Want to see what the expereince looks like? I created a sample Lolligift event page for your perusal. Yes, that's a real picture of Rick. And unfortunately, I've actually caught him looking his best.

Lolligift will send you the collected monies via PayPal (minus $5) or a check (free, unless you want it overnighted for $20). The Luddites among us might roll their eyes at what they perceive to be a needlessly complicated way to do a very simple thing - pass the hat for an office gift - but personally, I think this is the best thing to happen to office gifts since leftover cake in the break room.
