Stacey Dean Rambold, former Mont. teacher who raped student, sentenced to 30 days in jail

(CBS/AP) BILLINGS, Mont. - A former teacher at a Billings, Mont. high school who pleaded guilty to raping a 14-year-old student who later committed suicide has reportedly been sentenced to 30 days in jail by a judge who said the victim was "older than her chronological age" and "as much in control of the situation" as the teacher.

The Billings Gazette reports District Judge G. Todd Baugh sentenced Stacey Dean Rambold, 54, to 15 years in prison with all but 31 days suspended for sexual intercourse without consent. He gave Rambold credit for one day already served.

The girl's mother repeatedly screamed: "You people suck!" and stormed out of the courtroom Monday.

Rambold reached a deferred prosecution agreement after the girl's death, but prosecutors revived the case when they learned he had been terminated from a sex offender treatment program.

Before the judge handed down his sentence, prosecutors had reportedly asked a judge to order Rambold to serve 20 years in prison, saying he targeted a troubled teen and violated his position of trust as a teacher by having sex with her.

The girl's mother reportedly begged the judge to put "put [Rambold] behind bars," saying his relationship with her daughter was a "major factor" in her suicide.

Rambold's defense attorney said he had lost his career, marriage and home as a result of the case, and suffered because of publicity.

Baugh said he listened to recorded statements given by the teen before her death before sentencing Rambold.
