Sopranos director: Can't run away from violent TV because of "deranged individuals"
(CBS News) Emmy-winning writer and director David Chase is out with his first feature film, set to open in theaters on December 19. The film, "Not Fade Away," shares the story of a young man's struggle to find himself in the rock-and-roll era of the 1960's in suburban New Jersey, and features James Gandolfini -- who also starred in Chase's "The Sopranos" -- as the overbearing father.
While promoting the film, Chase has faced questions about the role of violence in TV and film , particularly in the acclaimed "The Sopranos," in light of last week's massacre in Newtown, Conn.
Tuesday on "CBS This Morning," Chase addressed the issue, saying "I don't know how you answer that, and I'm not trying to be glib...the other day I thought to myself, 'Does Mary Poppins make the world a better place? Where's the data on that?'"
"You expect that the majority of human beings can tell the different between reality and...wherever they are," he continued, before adding, "I think we have to make things for the majority and not run away from it because of some deranged individuals....I think about that and you wonder."
