Sonic CD Review: Feels fresher than any modern Sonic release
(CBS) - Originally released in 1993 on the ill-fated Sega CD, Sonic CD was a wonder to behold.
The game delivered the classic Sonic experience while introducing new characters, a neat time-travel gimmick that added some depth to the 2-D platformer and some of the best level design that the series hasn't seen the likes of since.
The port that was released earlier this month is more or less exactly as you remember it. The controls are tight, Sonic is fast and Dr. Robotnik... er - Eggman - is fat.
What's new this time around are the optional video filters that allow for a classic pixelated look or a more modern, sharpened image and the ability to unlock Miles "Tails" Prower after completing the game once.
Despite Sonic's iconic stature, his games have grown increasingly stale over all these years. With little innovation and generally shallow gameplay, most Sonic games don't quite hold up to close scrutiny as well as his notable competition - namely Mario and Mega Man.
Despite this, Sonic CD manages to feel fresh even after over a decade. The intricate level design and "good" and "bad" endings will have you spending more time thinking your way through levels rather than just racing to each zone's goal.
Sonic CD delivers a kind of magic that SEGA has seemed incapable of recapturing in the years since with their "Blue Dude with a 'Tude."
So for all you big-time Sonic fans who incessantly compare every Sonic game to this classic gaming emerald of times passed, download this title and enjoy the nostalgia.
Sonic CD is rated E for Everyone by the ESRB. It is available now for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, iPhone, Android, Windows Phone and - if you still have one - Sega CD.
