Garcia-Torres was arrested on suspicion of murder and kidnapping Monday night at a Safeway store in Morgan Hill, Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith said at a late Monday news conference.
"We believe we have probable cause that he committed the kidnapping and murder of Sierra LaMar," Smith said.
LaMar hasn't been seen or heard since she left her home in Morgan Hill to go to school on March 16. Police believe she was kidnapped while walking to a school bus stop that morning, according to The Associated Press.
Since then, volunteers and sheriff's officials continued searches on fields, open spaces and reservoirs near and around Morgan Hill.
Smith told reporters that investigators gathered "a lot of physical evidence" that ties Garcia-Torres to the case, the San Jose Mercury News reported. No additional information is immediately available but a news conference is scheduled for Tuesday morning.
