Showtime's "Weeds" to end after eighth season
(CBS News) Showtime's original series "Weeds" starring Mary-Louise Parker will end this year after eight seasons, reports Entertainment Weekly.
The show's creator Jenji Kohan told the site she was "sad" about the news, but she is excited about the creative possibilities a series finale brings.
"We wrack our brains every year for crazy cliffhangers and we're trying to figure out how to top ourselves," she told EW.
"Weeds" premiered in 2005 and received critical acclaim and earned Parker a Golden Globe for her portrayal of Nancy Botwin, a pot-dealing suburban mother.
Kevin Beggs the president of Lionsgate Television Group, the studio that produces "Weeds," said the show really paved the way for innovative Television shows.
"From a creative standpoint, the show broke a bunch of barriers," Beggs said, reports EW. "It became one of the most talked about cable comedies and ushered in a new era. Jenji's unique voice skewered hypocrisy; whether attitudes towards drug use, racism, sexism or suburbia."
The final season of "Weeds" is set to air July 1 at 10 p.m. on Showtime.
