(CBS/AP) BURBANK, Calif. - A judge has granted Selena Gomez a temporary restraining order from a man with a history of mental illness who police say threatened her life.

Court records show the actress-singer was granted the order Thursday in Burbank, which is north of downtown Los Angeles. Thomas Brodnicki is required to stay 100 yards away from Gomez and her workplace until a Nov. 4 hearing, when the order may be extended for three years.

Gomez wrote in a sworn declaration that she is in "extreme fear" of Brodnicki.

The filings say that state police were notified by mental health workers that the 46-year-old had threatened to harm or kill the actress while on a psychiatric hold. TMZ reports that according to Gomez and her lawyer's court statements, Brodnicki told a psychiatrist that he traveled to Los Angeles to meet the star, visited her workplace at least three times and has told people he had conversations with God about killing her.

According to the website, Brodnicki has a history of mental illness and a criminal history of stalking.

Gomez, who is also noted for being Justin Bieber's girlfriend, will host the MTV European Music Awards on Nov. 6, 2011.
