Santa Monica College Shooting Update: Suspect in custody, three victims being treated, officials say
(CBS/AP) SANTA MONICA, Calif. - One suspect is in custody after a shooting on or near the Santa Monica College campus Friday, the California Highway Patrol says.
CBS Los Angeles reports three victims are being treated at a nearby hospital.
Officials at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center say two of the victims are in critical condition and one is in serious condition, the station reports.
Authorities received a 911 call at 11:55 a.m. Friday reporting a man with one or more guns firing south of the campus, Santa Monica police say, according to the station.
A spokeswoman for the CHP told the station that they had received reports of a man shooting into traffic and at a bus.
Reports say a worker on campus heard dozens of gunshots and saw students scrambling for safety.
CBS Los Angeles reports the shooting started at a residence.
According to its website, Santa Monica College is a 2-year community college serving more than 30,000 students.
President Barack Obama is in Santa Monica speaking at a luncheon fundraiser for the Democratic National Committee about a 10-minute drive from where the shooting took place, the station reports.
All Santa Monica schools were reported to be on lockdown until further notice.
