SF Giants fan who survived 2011 attack discusses memory loss
CAPITOLA, Cali. -- Bryan Stow, a San Francisco Giants fan who was severely beaten outside Dodger Stadium in 2011, is speaking out about his recovery, CBS Los Angeles reports.
Stow, who was 42 years old at the time, suffered permanent brain damage and almost lost his life when he was beaten in the parking lot after the Opening Day game between the rival Giants and Dodgers.
Louie Sanchez, 31, pleaded guilty in February to one felony count of mayhem. He was sentenced to eight years in state prison by Judge George Lomeli. Marvin Norwood, 33, pleaded guilty to felony assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury and was sentenced to four years.
Stow spoke with USA Today, describing how brain damage and a lack of short-term memory effect his life.
"When my parents, and my sisters even, remember (events), I don't, and it doesn't seem like I can," Stow said.
When asked what kinds of things he can't remember, he responded, "What I did last night, to how I was yesterday, to what I did an hour ago."
In July, a jury awarded Stow $18 million in a civil lawsuit against the Los Angeles Dodgers and other defendants. The ruling left the Dodgers on the hook for Stow's medical bills and lost earnings.
In the suit, the Stow family projected his lifetime medical bills to be approximately $38 million.
They say he will require 24/7 care for the rest of his life.
