San Diego machete murder suspect arrested in Phoenix

SAN DIEGO -- Police say a 22-year-old man suspected of hacking another man to death with a machete last week in San Diego has been arrested in Phoenix, CBS affiliate KFMB reports.

Vincent Garza Salas was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals around 3:30 p.m. Thursday, and was expected to face charges in connection with the death of 43-year-old Vicente Carrera, according to San Diego police Lt. Paul Rorrison.

A no-bail warrant was issued for Salas' arrest on Tuesday.

Carrera's body was found on an enclosed back patio in the Rolando neighborhood of San Diego on the morning of Nov. 6. There was major upper body trauma, the station reported.

Police believed the victim was killed around 10 p.m. the night before with a machete, which has been recovered.

Rorrison said the victim did not live at the residence, but was a regular visitor.

In a police bulletin issued Thursday morning, Salas was described as a heavy methamphetamine user who was known to be violent and carry knives.
