SAG Awards 2011 Fashion: Best and Worst Dressed
NEW YORK (CBS) As awards season kicks into high gear, so do the celebrities, pulling out all the stops on the red carpet in the build-up to what is considered Hollywood's most glamorous night - the Academy Awards.
Sunday's Screen Actors Guild Awards paved the way, providing Hollywood's elite the opportunity to put their most fashionable foot forward. Stars of the big and small screen went for the "wow" factor, dressing in diverse showstoppers, displaying personal style, as well as highlighting some of the hottest upcoming trends. For the most part, solids and bright colors (including hot pink and red) were in vogue, while trends for hair and jewelry reflected a move towards more classic styles.
Felix Mercado, celebrity style expert and president and owner of Say It With STYLE, discussed what trends were on display, as well as which stars shined the brightest and who fizzled instead of sizzled.

SPECIAL SECTION: Awards Season
"Lace made a big return," Mercado said. "We saw lace gowns with just a hint of edge as well as one-sleeve and strapless dresses in jewel tones, red, pink and white.Unfortunately, I felt the SAG Awards were more like the SAD Awards, with very few 'OMG' moments until Sophia Vergara and Hillary Swank stepped out. Overall, everyone looked good. Let's hope they're saving their fierce fashions for the Oscars."

Here are Mercado's picks for best and worst dressed of the night:
Best Dressed:
-Hilary Swank in Versace. "Her one-shoulder nude chiffon gown with crystal detailing was stunning."
-Lea Michele in Oscar de la Renta. "My second favorite next to Hilary Swank. Lea's look was flawless."
-Archie Punjabi in David Meister. "Two words - absolutely fabulous!"
-Kyra Sedgwick. "Very flattering and age appropriate."
-Mariska Hargitay. "This is the best she's ever looked."
-Dianna Agron. "I loved the tea length Chanel Haute Couture dress. I thought the color was stunning but wished she dressed it up with the accessories. Black is so predictable for junior fashionistas."
-Sofia Vergara was "absolutely stunning in royal blue. She can do no wrong. Move over Eva Longoria, there is a new Latina in Tinseltown!"
-Amber Riley looked "stunning" in a black one-shoulder gown.
Julianna Margulies' strapless red dress was "absolutely stunning."
Worst Dressed:
-Nicole Kidman in Nina Ricci.
-Winona Ryder "looked like she was in a prom dress gone bad."
-Eva Longoria. "The dress was ill-fitted and waistline was too low. The 'toga dress' was not flattering at all."
-Hailee Steinfeld in Prada. "She looked as though she got into a fight with a box of crayons and lost - or, better yet, a bad Halloween costume."
-Jennifer Lawrence in not-so-hot pink Oscar de la Renta. "I felt the belt competed with the shoulder straps and the black was too hard against the pink. I would have preferred no belt, the slit not so high and different-colored accessories."
-Kim Kardashian. "The Grecian style gown was way off the mark. There were so many things wrong with her I don't know where to begin. Poor Kim - looks likes she's so busy with her reality shows, fragrance line and boutiques that she didn't have time to find a more flattering gown. Why was she there again?"
-Angie Harmon in Monique Lhuillier "looked like she got into a fight with Big Bird."
-Helena Bonham Carter looked "somewhat sophisticated in black and white, but not good enough to make it off my worst dressed list."
