Safe Investments: Bonds, Gold and Cash?

When investors were spooked by the financial crisis and plunging stock market, they turned to what they thought were "safe" investments. Two years later, many are learning that bond prices can actually drop (check out the value of the bond fund in your 401 (k) as proof!) and assets that are sometimes seen as "safe" may not be.
