Saddam Goes Hollywood

Return to Showdown in the Gulf
While Americans were watching three top Clinton administration officials being jeered and heckled at a town meeting in Columbus, Ohio, Iraqis were watching Wag the Dog on television.

Iraq's state-run television showed a pirated copy of the popular Hollywood film, which depicts a U.S. president who attempts to deflect attention from a White House sex scandal by declaring war on Albania.

The striking parallels between the movie and President Clinton's current problems have been the object of much comment and discussion in the U.S.

The Iraqis, it seems, take an extremely somber view of the Tinseltown production. The film, state TV declared solemnly, shows "how debased and immoral America and its presidents are."
