Republican debate: Fact checking what neighbors in San Bernardino knew
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Thursday night claimed that neighbors of the two San Bernardino shooters knew that Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik intended to attack the U.S.
During the GOP presidential debate in Des Moines, Iowa, Fox News moderator Megyn Kelly asked Christie about the reluctance of neighbors to not report the couple because it could have been perceived as racial profiling.
"These folks had weapons, they knew that they were talking about trying to take our country and attack it," Christie said. "That's not profiling, that's law enforcement."
Kelly added interrupted and pointed out that the couple's neighbors didn't know they were planning an attack.
"They knew they were talking about attacking people," Christie said.
Kelly said that neighbors had seen men "going in and out of the garage. They saw packages being delivered. They saw Muslims, and they did not think that was enough to call the cops. Do you?"
Politifact, however, evaluated the news coverage after the Dec. 2 shooting in San Bernardino and there was no evidence of neighbors knowing about any plans of an attack in advance.
A Wall Street Journal article from December said that people who knew the couple described them as quiet, religious people who didn't appear suspicious.
