Reports: Brittany Murphy may have died from poisoning

New questions are being raised about the death of actress Brittany Murphy.

Her father, Angelo Bertolotti, says a recent independent toxicology test which he financed concludes the late "Clueless" star, who died in December 2009, may actually have been poisoned.

At the time of her death, the Los Angeles County Coroner ruled that Murphy, 32, had suffered from pneumonia, complicated by anemia and the use of over-the-counter medications.

Bertolotti told the New York Daily News that high levels of toxic heavy metals including barium, commonly used in rat poison, were found in a hair sample belonging to Murphy.

The Los Angeles County Coroner's office told KCBS Tuesday that they have not seen the test results. "Her father has not contacted us or provided us any of that information to review," assistant chief of investigations Ed Winter said.

Five months after Murphy's death, her 40-year-old husband Simon Monjack also died. Once again, medical examiners ruled pneumonia the cause of death.

Bertolotti also told the Examiner.com that Murphy suffered from symptoms like severe stomach pain and vomiting before her death, which which could have been caused by heavy metal poisoning.

Last year, Bertolotti filed a lawsuit against the coroner's office and the LAPD, claiming negligence in Murphy's death investigation. That suit has since been dropped.
