Report: Tom Vilsack not running for Senate
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack will not seek Iowa's open Senate seat, according to the Des Moines Register.
"He will not seek the open seat," Matt Paul, a Vilsack aide, told the Register.
Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, who has served in the Senate since 1985, announced his retirement last month, opening up a Democratic seat in the state.
Despite speculation about Vilsack possibly running in 2014, Vilsack, who was governor of Iowa from 1999-2007 and briefly flirted with a 2008 presidential bid, had not actually expressed publicly he was interested in the seat.
In light of his decision, Rep. Bruce Braley, D-Iowa, who has already announced his bid for the seat, currently appears poised to pick up the Democratic nomination.
