Questions swirl around OSU athlete's death

A preliminary autopsy shows Kosta Karageorge, an Ohio State University football player and wrestler, died from a gunshot wound to the head, but questions continue to swirl around his apparent suicide.

The preliminary autopsy didn't shed any light on whether Karageorge committed suicide or if he was the victim of foul play, reports CBS News correspondent Don Dahler.

His remains were discovered Sunday inside a dumpster not far from his apartment.

CBS News has learned the handgun recovered near the body belonged to Karageorge.

Police still say the 22-year-old likely killed himself -- something his teammates, who knew him as a fun-loving athlete and natural leader, found hard to accept.

"He's really just one of the last people you would expect that this would happen to, or that he would make this kind of decision, really. It's just really shocking," OSU wrestler Jack Rozema said.

It's unclear how long Karageorge's body was inside the dumpster.

Toxicology results won't be available for another two to three weeks.

Karageorge was last seen leaving his apartment around 2 a.m. Wednesday, dressed completely in black.

Before he vanished, he sent a text to his mother, saying, "I am sorry if I am an embarrassment but these concussions have my head all f---ed up."

According to his family, Karageorge had a history of concussions and was sometimes disoriented.

Friends say he rarely talked about that.

"I think Kosta -- he just had like a moment of weakness, and you know, sometimes, that's all it takes. Just one time, and it looks like it was that for Kosta this time," OSU wrestler Joshua Fox said.

Karageorge's brain is now being examined by experts at Ohio State for signs of concussion-related injuries. He was a walk-on defensive tackle for the OSU football team, but had not yet played in any games.
