Python Strangles Child in Florida
A child was strangled to death by a python, Florida sheriff's officials said Wednesday, reports CBS affiliate WKMG-TV in Orlando.
The incident happened at 10 a.m. EDT, Sumter County officials said.
Lt. Steve Binegar of the Sumter County Sheriff's Office says a 2-year-old girl was apparently strangled by a python in the town Oxford on Wednesday. He abruptly hung up without answering further questions. Oxford is about 50 miles northwest of Orlando.
An invasion of giant Burmese pythons in South Florida that made national headlines last year was "rapidly expanding" and could reach Central Florida, according to a University of Florida study, WKMG reports.
