Purdue, Drew Brees Into Rose

Purdue is bound for the Rose Bowl.

Drew Brees and Montrell Lowe made sure of that Saturday.

Brees threw for one touchdown, ran for another, and Lowe rushed for four TDs to lead the Boilermakers to a 41-13 victory over Indiana - giving Purdue its first trip to Pasadena in 34 years.

Brees completed 20 of 29 passes for 216 yards, and Lowe carried 38 times for career-high 208 yards and four touchdowns.

Afterward, fans poured onto the field with a sign that read "We Smell Roses" and another that had a drawing of the Heisman Trophy. They climbed the goal posts, but, after having been greased before the game, could not bring them down.

It was a wild scene, one that hadn't been witnessed at Ross-Ade Stadium since the days of Bob Griese.

  • The Boilermakers (8-3, 6-2) had to win to clinch a share of the Big Ten title and a trip to Pasadena, Calif., and Brees wasted no time in getting the Boilermakers started.

On their second possession, Brees guided Purdue on a 74-yard march, capped by Lowe's 12-yard touchdown run. Kicker Travis Dorsch missed the extra point wide left, making it 6-0 with 5:22 left in the first quarter.

That was about the only thing that went wrong for the Boilermakers, though.

Purdue extended its lead to 13-0 on its next possession, when Brees connected with Tim Stratton on a 13-yard touchdown pass with 54 seconds left in the quarter.

Then Indiana (3-8, 2-6) responded with a 61-yard drive that culminated in a 10-yard touchdown pass from Antwaan Randle El to Versie Gaddis just 1:05 into the second quarter. That play made Randle El only the second player in Division I-A history to throw for 200 points and rush for 200 points.

Brees answered late in the half, with a 2-yard touchdown run that gave Purdue a 20-7 halftime edge.

But in the second half, Purdue proved no match for the Hoosiers, who lost the Old Oaken Bucket for the fouth consecutive year.

Purdue drove to the Indiana 7 before Brees fumbled. Four plays later, however, the Boilermakers had the ball again, and seven plays after that, Lowe raced in from 6 yards out to make it 27-7.

Lowe scored again, on a 3-yard run with 2:45 to go, to make it 35-7, and Indiana only managed a 5-yard touchdown run from Levron Williams 10 seconds into the fourth quarter. The Hoosiers failed on a 2-point conversion attempt.

Lowe's final touchdown came on a 1-yard run with 9:52 remaining.

Randle El carried 20 times for 112 yards.
