Ponytails Key "Beat-The-Heat" Hairstyles
The heat and humidity summer brings can ruin an otherwise good hair day, brining with them frizzy poufs or flat and limp locks.
What to do?
The Early Show's stylist to the stars, David Evangelista says — turn to the ponytail!
He suggests three styles that'll look great all day, and for any occasion. Each can be done simply, at home, and each starts with a simple ponytail.
MIDHEAD PONY WITH GRADUATED SIDES
"This look is great for a casual barbeque or a daytime summer function," Evangelista says.
Tools needed: blow dryer, volumizer, snag proof elastics, spray shine and/or light hold hair spray, hair pins.
Prep hair with volumizing spray, then use your blow dryer heat to create volume and texture. Take hair from the crown and sides, leaving a one-inch band of hair out from above both ears upward. Secure hair at the mid back of the crown of the head with a snag proof elastic. Take bands of hair left out above the ears and attach to the ponytail with hairpins in a graduated manner.
SIDE SWEPT EXAGGERATED PONYTAIL
"This look is great for a hot night out on the town this summer," Evangelista observes.
Tools needed: blow dryer, mousse, boar bristle brush, light hold hair spray, teasing comb, mason pearson brush, snag proof elastics, hair pins/bobby pins.
First, prep hair with mousse and blow dry with a boar bristle brush, bending the ends under. Take a light hold hair spray and mist the roots of the hair. On a high heat setting, blow the roots of your hair with your dryer to create hold. Next, use a teasing comb and lightly tease roots to three-quarters of the way down the hair shaft. Take a Mason Pearson or boar bristle brush and brush hair to the extreme right or left side, based on preference, and pull into a pony tail, positioning it right under the ear, and secure it with a snag proof elastic. Then, take a splice of the hair in the ponytail, wrap it around the elastic, and secure with hair pin to conceal. An added option: use a curling iron and wave out the ponytail for a more dramatic look.
DOUBLE PONY KNOT
"This look is great for a special occasion this summer," says Evangelista, "like a summer wedding, or an outdoor engagement party."
Tools needed: texturizing balm/light gel and/or volumizer, blow dryer, boar bristle brush or curling iron, light hold hair spray, snag proof elastics, teasing comb, hair pins, shine spray.
First, prep hair with a texturizing balm or a light gel or volumizer. Blow dry hair with a boar bristle brush and bend ends under, or blow dry hair with fingers and wrap ends under with a curling iron. Spray hair with light hold hair spray Take hair from the crown and sides and pull back into a ponytail, placing it at the occipital bone. Take the remaining hair and pull back into a low ponytail, right under the first ponytail. Take the teasing comb and lighty tease both ponytails. Then, take the ponytails and intertwine into a disheveled knot and secure with hair pins. To finish, spray with shine spray.
