Police: Teen accused in woman's beating at Calif. dog park
LODI, Calif. -- A 17-year-old is accused in a dog park attack on a woman that left her in a coma, reports CBS Sacramento.
Family members say they knew something was wrong when Jacqueline Pickett's boyfriend said she hadn't returned from walking her dogs on Monday. Her mother's Facebook post about her missing 22-year-old daughter spread the word fast, according to the station.
"Something told me, something wasn't right. I pulled over and I set up a post, because I wanted quick action. I knew that's what counts," her mother, Amber Gomes, said.
One person told her that something had happened at the dog park, reports CBS Sacramento. Then, a stranger called Gomes and told her about the attack on someone with a white dog.
Police say a witness reported the attack and when they arrived, they arrested the suspect and charged her with attempted murder, according to the station.
Paramedics reportedly found Pickett unconscious at 3 p.m. and rushed her to San Joaquin County Hospital for surgery.
Police say she had severe head trauma and believe Pickett was beaten in the head with a baseball bat. Her mom says that doctors had to remove a portion of her skull to reduce the bleeding.
Some family members do not believe she knew her attacker, but say she did show signs of defensive wounds, according to CBS Sacramento. Others do not think it is so random.
"This was something that someone planned. Who goes to a beautiful dog park on the west side of Lodi with a baseball bat and attacks a woman walking her dogs," Gomes said.
The San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office reportedly has until Thursday to determine whether to charge the teen as an adult.
