Police: Shots fired at D.C. National Mall
WASHINGTON -- U.S. Park Police say they believe someone fired shots from a vehicle on the National Mall.
Police spokeswoman Sgt. Lelani Woods says there's no indication that anyone was injured in the shooting, which was reported about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Woods says investigators found broken glass at the scene.
She says the vehicle from which shots were fired was later spotted near the Kennedy Center. She did not have a description of the vehicle.
U.S. Park Police report that the shooting happened between people inside of a car and that they are looking for a possible victim.
A witness told CBS News affiliate WUSA that he saw three men fighting inside a car. Then he heard a pop and a window shattered.
Washington fire and EMS officials say no one has been transported from the scene.
Woods said there is no ongoing threat to the public and the monuments and memorials were never closed. The intersection was blocked with police tape, but tourists otherwise milled about freely.
The location is at the intersection of 17th Street and Independence Avenue in southwest Washington, between the World War II Memorial and the Tidal Basin.
In May, a bomb squad safely destroyed a pressure cooker found in a "suspicious" vehicle left unattended on the National Mall near the U.S. Capitol building. The vehicle's owner was located and arrested, a U.S. Capitol Police spokeswoman said.
