Police Shoot Knife-Wielding Man in Wheelchair
SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco police say a knife-wielding man in a wheelchair stabbed an officer before the attacker was shot in the groin.
Police released a witness cell phone video showing four officers surrounding the suspect in his wheelchair before Tuesday morning's shooting.
Officers were called to the Department of Public Health building by witnesses who said the agitated man was slashing tires on parked city-owned vehicles, reports KPIX, which obtained the video (Scroll down to watch).
At one point, an officer was apparently stabbed in the shoulder.
The man, whose name has not yet been released, was not confined to the chair, San Francisco police officer Eric Chiang told KPIX.
"He was seen up and moving about a number of times," he said.
According to a San Francisco Chronicle report, Police Chief George Gascón told a news conference officers tried to subdue the man with pepper spray and eventually a bean bag round before the shooting.
"I want to make sure we put the video in context," Gascón said.
"He appears to toss the knife" in the video, the chief said, but officers are "reacting to the motion. What the officers are seeing and what is actually happening may be different."
The suspect and wounded officer are in the hospital with non life-threatening wounds.
