Police: 1 officer dead, 5 wounded after drug-related Utah shooting

(CBS/AP) OGDEN, Utah - Authorities said a Utah police officer has died following a shootout that left five other officers and a suspect wounded.

The shots rang out shortly before 9 p.m. Wednesday as an anti-drug strike team was serving a warrant at a residence on Jackson Avenue, in Ogden, said police spokesman Lt. Tony Fox.

Ogden police said in a statement early Thursday that agent Jared Francom died from his wounds following Wednesday night's  shooting. The team serving the search warrant involved officers from the Weber-Morgan Narcotics Strike Force.

The six officers were hospitalized as was the suspect, Fox told The Associated Press.

Police said Francom was a seven-year veteran and is survived by his wife and two young children.

Police blocked off the area from 34th Street and Jackson Avenue to 32nd Street and a SWAT team took positions.

Authorities have not released information on how the remaining officers and the suspect were shot. 

A witness told CBS affiliate KUTV the gunfire exchange may have started with a chase. A man who works at a nearby gas station says he watched up to 30 police vehicles in a high-speed chase with a suspicious vehicle.

The Standard-Examiner of Utah said police eventually surrounded the suspect near a backyard shed.

Nearby witnesses said they heard three quick pops followed by a two to three minute pause, then lots of gunfire.

Skyler Campbell, who lives nearby, says he heard three popping sounds of gunfire, and then the sound of multiple rapid-fire gunshots go off, reports KUTV.

Another witness said he too heard rapid gunfire and the popping sounds of gunshots, as well as officers shouting "Get down! Get down!" The witness said he heard at least three rounds of rapid gunfire.

The sole suspect in the shooting is at a local hospital under guard, with non-life threatening injuries.

No names have been released.
