(CBS) - Good news for video game fans. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) announced the global price drop on the PlayStation 3 (PS3) console at the Gamescom 2011 trade show.

GameSpot live blogged at the event and reported the new prices as, "249 euros, $249, 24,980 yen." Sony has not lowered the cost on the popular console since 2009. The original price tag for the machine was $499 when it launch in November 2006.

The Associate Press reports, "Sony says it is cutting the price of its PlayStation 3 gaming console by $50 in an attempt to drum up demand for the 5-year-old video game console."

According to GameSpot, the new president and chief operating officer of SCEE, Jim Ryan, also highlighted the PS Vita, Sony's new hand-held device. Ryan was "talking up the analog sticks, OLED screen, multi-touch screen and multi-touch pad, six-axis motion sensing and front and rear cameras for augmented reality experiences."

The PS Vita will also integrate Facebook, Skype, Twitter and Foursquare. And is set for release in early 2012.

Gamescom 2011 takes place August 17 to 21 in Cologne, Germany.
