Philly-area HS b-ball coach videoed knocking ref to ground
NESHAMINY, Pa.-- A Pennsylvania high school basketball coach who apparently head-butted a referee during a game has been put on leave.
In the final seconds of a game Tuesday night against the team's biggest rival, Pennsbury High School, a foul call sent Neshaminy High School boys basketball coach Jerry Devine into a rage, reports CBS Philadelphia. After coming on the court to protest, Devine can be seen either headbutting or chest-bumping an official. It's a moment caught during an Internet video stream broadcast on WBCB1490.com.
The announcers called the event like this: "Offensive foul and a technical. And Jerry Devine bumps the official. The official goes down, so that should be two technicals and he is gone."
Devine was ejected from the game, which carries a mandatory one-game suspension under PIAA rules.
The school district said in a statement Wednesday that the coach, who also teaches algebra and history, has been placed on administrative leave pending a review of the incident.
The Middletown Township Police Department is investigating the incident, but there was no initial word on any charges against Devine.
Video of the incident was also caught on cell phone and was being shared on social media.
The referee, who was not immediately identified, finished the game and did not appear to be injured.
Pennsbury won the game 49-42.
