Phil Collins retiring from music, apologizes for success

(CBS) Singer and former Genesis drummer Phil Collins has indicated that he is retiring from the music business.

The 60-year-old tells FHM magazine that years behind a drum kit have produced hearing problems, a dislocated vertebra and nerve damage in his hands, making it difficult and painful for him to continue his work.

Collins adds that doesn't see himself in the current music scene.

"I look at the MTV Music Awards and I think: 'I can't be in the same business as this,'" he tells FHM, according to the UK's Telegraph. "I don't really belong to that world and I don't think anyone's going to miss me. I'm much happier just to write myself out of the script entirely."

Collins, who has seven Grammys and an Academy Award for his work on Disney's "Tarzan" under his belt, also notes that he's not surprised that people "grew to hate" him because of his huge success.

"I'm sorry that it was all so successful. I honestly didn't mean it to happen like that. It's hardly surprising that people grew to hate me," he says.

In 1970, Collins joined Genesis as a drummer and later became the bands lead singer after Peter Gabriel left in 1975. He later launched a successful solo career, scoring hits like "One More Night," "Sussudio," "Against All Odds" and "In the Air Tonight."

Collins, who lives in Switzerland, says his main priority now is being a father to his five children.

"I'm not worried about not being able to play the drums again, I'm more worried about being able to cut a loaf of bread safely or building things for my kids," he says.
