Pack of pit bulls maul, kill N.M. woman

TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES, N.M. - Authorities say a woman has died after she was attacked by four pit bull mix dogs while out for a walk.

Police say 48-year-old Margaret Salcedo was out walking Sunday afternoon in Truth or Consequences when the dogs mauled her for several minutes.

A witness tells KOB-TV she heard the commotion and immediately called police.

The police chief says an officer quickly arrived on scene and shot into the air to scare the dogs, and when one of the animals charged at the officer he shot and killed it. The other three dogs were impounded.

Saucedo died at the hospital a few hours after the attack.

Police say the dogs likely got loose from a nearby home. The district attorney is deciding whether to file charges against the owner, John Hardiman.
