Police believe 30-year-old Steenkamp was in her nightgown when she was first shot in the bedroom. CBS News reports that police said she slept in the same bed as 26-year-old Pistorius before running to the bathroom and locking herself inside, where she was allegedly shot in the head, hand and arm.
Pistorius reportedly broke through the bathroom door and carried his dying girlfriend down the stairs. His sister Aimee arrived to their home and found Pistorius trying to revive his girlfriend. He reportedly told his sister he thought Steenkamp was a burglar. Aimee later gave a sworn statement to police, CBS News reports.
Pistorius, who made history last year for becoming the first double-amputee track athlete to compete at the Olympics, was charged Thursday with murdering his girlfriend. He is due back in a South African court Tuesday for a bail application hearing, the same day of Steenkamp's funeral. Pistorious is reportedly on suicide watch.
His father Henke Pistorius told a reporter for Britain's Telegraph newspaper that his son acted "on instinct," believing he was attacking an intruder.
Police dismissed the intruder theory and arrested Oscar Pistorius on murder charges. They took a 9-mm gun from the home, CBS News reports.
