Olowokandi Has Knee Surgery
Los Angeles Clippers center Michael Olowokandi, who had a disappointing rookie season after being selected first overall in the NBA draft, underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Tuesday, the team said.
Olowokandi had cartilage removed and is expected to begin rehabilitation exercises immediately and workouts in two to three weeks, according to Dr. Art Ting, the team physician of the NHL's San Jose Sharks who performed the procedure.
The 7-foot Nigerian-born Olowokandi, who was raised in England, averaged 8.9 points and 7.9 rebounds in 45 games for the NBA's worst team.
When a lockout delayed the start of the 1998-99 season, Olowokandi signed to play in the Italian League. He was released from his Italian League contract and joined the Clippers when the lockout ended.
Olowokandi, who did not take up basketball until six years ago, averaged 22.2 points and 11.2 rebounds as a senior at Pacific.
