Ohio man admits role in girlfriend's murder-for-hire plot that killed mother
(CBS/WOIO/AP) AKRON, Ohio - Brian Scott Smith, the third and final defendant in an Ohio murder-for-hire case, has pleaded guilty in a 2009 stabbing death devised by the victim's daughter.
Smith, 24, the daughter's ex-boyfriend, pleaded guilty to aggravated murder Monday in Akron in the death of 58-year-old Kristie Marks, who was reportedly lured to an apartment complex by Smith and her daughter, Taylor Marie Marks, on October 24, 2009.
Kristie Marks was then brutally stabbed by 20-year-old Troy A. Purdie II, who was allegedly promised $5,000 for the killing, but never received it. The victim was transported to Akron City Hospital where she later died, according to CBS affiliate WOIO.
Detectives discovered that Taylor Marks wanted her mother dead to inherit money from her mother's will, to which she was the sole beneficiary, reports FOX affiliate WJW-TV.
She has pleaded guilty to aggravated murder. Purdie has also pleaded guilty and awaits sentencing on an aggravated murder charge.
Smith could face life in prison without parole at his sentencing on April 5.
