GLENDALE, Calif. -- For a few words, President Obama was the voice of a purple alien that invaded Earth.

“Happy Thanksgiving, everybody. Welcome to the White House,” said the cartoon creature named “Oh.”

Mr. Obama said his voice as a cartoon alien would impress his daughters, though he complained that the alien’s ears stuck out.

It was a demonstration of movie animation by the folks at DreamWorks, where Mr. Obama came to make a speech about growing the economy including the contributions of the movie, recording and broadcasting businesses.

Mr. Obama got to see a recording session with actors Steve Martin and Jim Parsons for a new animated film called “Home,” about aliens who take over the Earth.

The president questioned the actors about the differences between live-action movie-making and recording dialogue for animation.

The visit to DreamWorks Animation was the last stop of Mr. Obama’s three-day west coast trip to Washington state and California that was largely fundraising for the Democratic National Committee, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

Tuesday’s speech on the economy and an address Monday on immigration reform, serve to amortize the cost of the cross-country trip to the Democratic committees, though taxpayers end up paying the lion’s share of the cost, as is always the case for presidential political travel.

After the demonstration of the alien with the president’s voice, someone suggested they animate the next State of the Union Address. It was taken as a jest.
