"Spellbinding" photo captures horror of massacre in France

One poignant image taken in the immediate aftermath of the deadly truck attack in Nice, France has captured the vicious and indiscriminate nature of the massacre.

Reuters photographer Eric Gaillard, who lives in Nice, took the photograph. He told Time magazine that he was at home with his family when he heard the sirens. Once he found out what had happened, he raced towards the Promenade des Anglais, where he would take hundreds of photos of the chaotic scene.

He told Time that after sorting through the images later, he knew one stood out.

"It's spellbinding," he told Time, adding: "It summarizes, sadly, the situation."

In the end, the rampage left at least 84 people dead and more than 200 injured.

At least 10 children were among the dead, including a four-year-old.
