Burglary suspect shot during confrontation with NYC police
NEW YORK -- A New York City police officer shot and wounded a burglary suspect Monday, after a homeowner called 911 and said she was watching a remote surveillance feed and saw the man in her home.
Police said the woman reported seeing the suspect in her child's bedroom. When the officer encountered the suspect Monday afternoon, the "perpetrator charged the officer to get out the front door," according to New York Police Department Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce.
A struggle ensued and the officer fired one shot, striking the suspect in the groin, Boyce said. The suspect, who police say has a history of burglary arrests, managed to flee and was tracked down in a nearby backyard.
About three-quarters of a block away, officers responding to the burglary call found a woman lying on her driveway with a head wound. Surgeons at a hospital discovered a small wire cable in her scalp.
Detectives have not yet determined if the two incidents are related.
