New Jersey charity founder becomes victim of vandalism, theft
PITMAN, N.J.- A young woman who made it her mission to help others finds herself in need after the car she'd packed to leave for college was vandalized and all of her possessions were taken, reports CBS Philly.
Katelyn Darrow, who founded the organization, "Angels of God Clothing Closet," says she "felt like my whole life was in those boxes."
"I've just been trying to put it into perspective. There are people who have it a lot harder than I do. I have a place to sleep tonight and other people don't. Items are replaceable."
Her car's back window was smashed. She was readying to drive cross-country to go to college in Southern California.
Darrow says she started her charity after she went through a house fire when she was in the third grade and lost practically everything, so she knew what it felt like to not have any belongings.
"We had gone through our own hardships, so I wanted to start something that would help others because so many people reached out to help us," Darrow told the station.
Katelyn told CBS Philly that since starting Angels of God Clothing Closet at age 12 in 2009 the organization has helped more than 10,000 people, mostly in the South Jersey area.
A GoFundMe site has been created to help Katelyn replace her stolen items.
