New Baby Essentials
There are trends, and then then are tried and true favorites. Jessica Hartshorn, Sr. Lifestyles Editor for American Baby Magazine, shows off some essential baby products from this year's Amby Awards.
One thing that every parent has to have is a rear-facing infant car seat - it's mandated by law. There are several choices. Some parents choose to buy a convertible car seat that will cover both infant and toddler stages of growth, but Hartshorn recommends purchasing an infant seat to start out. Worry about the toddler stage later. "They're sized to fit the baby a little better. They lie a little more flat, which is more natural to their breathing," says Hartshorn.
While a car seat is a great, safe place for your child, you may want to look into buying a bouncer seat so that you have the same hands-free comfort in your home as well. Most bouncer seats don't cost much - about $30.00 - and give you a safe place for baby to rest or play while you take a shower or cook dinner. "They can see you, you can see them... making sure your baby sits in different positions during the day is really important," says Hartshorn.
A safe sleeping place is another key item that every new parent needs for their child. While it may be tempting to have your newborn sleep in bed next to you, it may not be in your child's best interest. "This is SIDS awareness month, and the SIDS Awareness people want you to know that co-sleeping, although it's cozy and convenient if you're breast feeding, is not the safest for your baby because of all the adult bedding, the pillows and the quilts..." says Hartshorn.
Instead, invest in a crib or a bassinette. You can even place your child's cozy little haven next to your own bed, so that you'll hear them right away if they're crying or in distress. Another option, if space is limited, is to buy an all-in-one crib/changing table/playpen. There are several models out there to choose from, and they're portable so you can even take them on vacation.
Most new parents buy a stroller, but many forget about a hands-free carrier for their little one. You can use it for just about anything - everything from strolls along the beach to vacuuming your living room. It keeps your baby close to you, so they're less likely to cry, but it gives you the freedom and mobility to use both your hands and walk around. Just strap them in and go!
Another product that Hartshorn recommends is a Boppy pillow. This U-shaped pillow offers weary parents some relief while feeding their infant and as the child gets a little stronger, parents can use it to prop them up. Both Mom and Dad can use the product, so it's family friendly.
The number one product in this year's Amby Awards was a lavender scented baby wash from Johnson & Johnson. "Our readers swear that it helps the kids sleep better at night. Parents like to use it too because it smells so good," says Hartshorn.
