MTV Invades Jersey Shore

The Jersey Shore registers pretty low on the glamour scale. Seaside Heights with its discount motels and weathered boardwalk has a decidedly '60s time-warp quality about it.

But this summer, The Early Show Correspondent Gretchen Carlson has discovered, one hip and happening beach house sits just down the boardwalk from the nostalgic reminders of Jersey's past.

"Seaside Heights — say hello to America," MTV personality Carson Daly commanded an exuberant crowd.

This year, MTV's Summer Beach House is not in Florida's swanky South Beach or cosmopolitan Mexico's Cancun but smack in the heart of blue-collar Jersey. (CBSNews.com is a subsidiary of Viacom which also owns MTV).

"Jersey is great for a lot of reasons; the vibe down here is so real," said Daly. "I mean, there's not this sort of 'casted' feeling which happens sometimes in a remote location. You have to bring the party. Here, it's genuine and it's down to earth and it's just genuine excitement."

Hundreds line up in the 96-degree heat; the lucky ones get put in high profile spots like the "hot tub."

Others may get the chance to introduce one of their musical idols.

Aussie Kylie Minogue came straight off a world tour to make her first-ever visit to the Jersey shore.

"We see you in Barcelona, you're in Milan, Paris," Daly said to Minogue during an interview. "Those are fine places, but not quite Seaside Heights, New Jersey. What do you think of our little beach house?"

"It's funny as we were driving here, we're all in the car going, 'It's kind of like the seaside in Australia but then again, it isn't,'" Minogue told Carlson.
