Middlesex district attorney Gerry Leone identified the victims as 64-year-old Ellen Ragna Stone, 41-year-old Laura Stone Mortimer, 4-year-old Thomas "Finn" Mortimer V, and 2-year-old Charlotte Mortimer.
Authorities would not reveal how they were killed, but Leone described the crime scene as "horrific, disturbing, and unspeakable." He added that he did not believe the killings were a random act.
However, police have not named Mortimer a suspect and are still looking into possible motives, says WBZ.
The bodies were discovered late Wednesday morning when Laura Stone Mortimer's sister Debra phoned police and voiced concern for the family's well-being, because she had not heard from them since Monday evening, reports the Boston Globe.
Firefighters arrived on the scene at 11:30 a.m. and broke down the door, revealing the crime scene inside.
Friends, neighbors, and family members are extremely upset and surprised.
"We are in shock because it wasn't a type of family you'd ever think that that would happen to," said Shelley Smyth, who grew up in the neighborhood.
Sandra Mortimer, Thomas' mother, told WBZ that her son and her daughter-in-law had been married seven years and were having some marital problems, but she could only speculate as she tried to stay out of their marriage.
She added that her son was "just a really nice man. He was the nicest and best son," and he loved his children.
Police are searching for Thomas Mortimer IV, who previously lived in Avon, Conn., Denver and Englewood, Colo., as well as Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
