C-section saves Missouri baby after mom dies in wreck
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Missouri doctors have managed to deliver a baby whose mother was killed in a crash on her way to a hospital to give birth.
The Southeast Missourian reports that 26-year-old Sarah Iler and the baby's father were driving Wednesday from Cape Girardeau to Poplar Bluff when a tanker truck collided with their SUV.
Cape Girardeau police Sgt. Adam Glueck says officers administered CPR in the hopes of saving Iler and the baby. Iler was declared dead on arrival at a hospital, but doctors performed an emergency cesarean section and delivered her daughter, Maddyson.
The newborn was taken off a ventilator on Friday, though doctors don't know yet if she suffered brain damage due to a lack of oxygen.
The father, Matt Rider, suffered extensive injuries but is recovering.
