7 dead, dozens injured when bus overturns in Mississippi
Seven people, including a 6-year-old boy and his 16-year-old sister, are dead and dozens injured after a bus crashed in Mississippi.
Authorities responded to the crash in Mississippi's Warren County at around 12:40 a.m., the Mississippi Highway Patrol said in a news release. The bus, operated by Regiomontanos Autobuses, was traveling westbound on Interstate 20 when it veered off the highway and overturned. Authorities did not say what caused the bus to leave the roadway.
Six people were pronounced dead at the scene, the MHP said, and one person died at Merit Health Hospital in Vicksburg.
More than 30 other passengers were taken to local hospitals in Vicksburg and Jackson with "unknown injuries," the MHP said. A person identified as the co-driver of the bus was not transported.
None of the victims have been publicly identified. Warren County coroner Doug Huskey told CBS News that two of the victims, a 6-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl, were siblings. He said the minors were both from Guatemala and were identified by their mother, however, Mexico's foreign minister on Sunday said all seven people who were killed were Mexican.
No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
A total of 43 people were on board — 41 passengers, one driver and one co-driver — the National Transportation Safety Board said Sunday.
The crash is being investigated by the NTSB, Mississippi Highway Patrol and the Commercial Transportation Enforcement Division.
